Nkhensani Mathabathe is currently leading the UNAIDS Culture Transformation workstream which aims to transform our spaces into safe, diverse, inclusive, anti-racist and empowering workplaces to work, learn and live. Before taking on this role Nkhensani was Adviser in the office of the Director Management at UNAIDS, providing direct support for ensuring effective deployment of resources towards the mandate of ending the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat.
Before joining UNAIDS Geneva, she worked in the Jamaica Country Office as Gender and Rights Adviser and also served as interim UCD in 2016. She started her UN career with UNAIDS in 2005 as Partnerships Adviser in South Africa, working closely with civil society in advocating for a funded, multisectoral response in South Africa. She worked with the powerful movements of people living with HIV in advocating for access to HIV prevention, treatment and for addressing structural barriers
She holds postgraduate qualifications in public health including Master of Community Dentistry, Diploma in Primary Health Care Management, and Master of Public Health. Young Nkhensani spent a few years working as a Dentist in private practice where the realities of health inequities in south Africa became more prominent promoting a career in public health.
