UNAIDS has appointed the model, actress and Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach as UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador for Asia and the Pacific on 3 May 2017. Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach is a German-Filipino actress, TV host, model and Miss Universe 2015. She began acting at the age of four under the stage name Pia Romero. Among her TV credits are the teen-oriented series K2BU, the concerta variety programme ASAP and the drama series Sa Piling Mo. She has also appeared in films such as All about Love and All My Life.
In her new role, Ms Wurtzbach will raise HIV awareness among young people, as well as promote zero discrimination towards people living with HIV and key populations including men who have sex with men and transgender people.
Ms Wurtzbach has been actively involved in humanitarian affairs, speaking out against cyber bullying and supporting people living with HIV as well as the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. During her reign as Miss Universe, she had an HIV test in front of cameras to encourage people to know their HIV status, as well as attended the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS at the U.N. headquarters in New York City, USA.
